The Client List: A Review on Seasons 1: Drawing the Line Between Fact vs. Fiction

A product of the Lifetime network, the tv show The Client List just recently caught my eye while browsing Netflix. As a sugar baby and dancer, I instantly dove into completing the series eager to see if I could relate, or see if this show has anything to do with the negative misconceptions associated with sugaring as well. Interestingly, enough I do believe this show has contributed, but also informed many on having clients and customers, and clearly shows how escorting is very different from sugaring.

Within the first episode you are introduced to Riley and Kyle Parks. A wed couple struggling financially. Kyle isn’t able to find a job and Riley lucks up on getting a job at a massage parlor. She gets the job and soon realized that the other girls do extra to get their big tips. Being against it at first, she soon succumbed to the pressure of paying the mortgage off on her house, and began to do extra as well. I can see why the first episode was called. “ The Rub of Sugar Land.” eventually catching the hang of doing extra on massages and getting her regulars, Riley seems to be coming up from the financial slope that stressed her and her husband out. Eventually, Riley is able to pay off her mortgage in cash, and Kyle leaves her due to his jealousy of her financial success.

This whole scenario I have witnessed with not only myself, but with other women as well who end up working in an establishment that exposes them to the world of sugaring. Women often times do not know what they are getting into, and are exposed to escorting and prostitution instead of a true sugar experience. They are also often times pushed to this line of work due to financial strain. Eventually the girls I have encountered get the hang of doing extra and began to make more money, and some of their financial debt is relieved. However, some girls quickly realize that money doesn’t buy happiness, and more problems are soon to come.

Riley realized that when one of her clients wife became involved, and a family member approached her about having a sugar daddy. Riley then became stressed because one of her client’s wife scribbled “whore” on her car. This is another factual thing that actually happens. Often times sugar dads have wives or girlfriends that find out about their sugar babies, resulting in fights and arguments. This is why it is important to be discrete , and watch communication.

Another interesting light that The Client List shared was Riley’s progression to being scared at first , and then all of a sudden her huge popularity , and success. With Riley’s newfound success came more money. Her coworkers either loved or hated her. Those that did not agree with her new position as a manager tried to sabotage her. This is also very common because women are very competitive and jealous when it comes to finding out their man is spending money on another woman. Especially in a strip club setting women will steal other girl’s money, break their shoes, or hide their make-up, especially if they are jealous of a girl. I recently just had someone dunk my phone in water. That is why it is important to keep all items in your posession secured and safe. However , it is not always cut throat sometimes sugar babies hang out and bond.

The Client List has to be one of the most factually and realistic series about sugaring, and it does open an eye to what goes on in massage parlors to a certain extinct. The massage parlors I have been too have always had women of Asian descent , and not have been diverse like on the series. Though some things are realistic this show does become unrealistic at times, but it’s ok it added to the plot. The first few episodes are interesting, and gives u an idea, but from my blogs will allow you to learn so much more. Upon finishing the season I will submit a par two for this blog. Stay tuned and see how Riley maintains being introduced into the world of sugar.
